Cisco – Slot Car
Showing off TSN network advantages in a fun and exciting way
Cisco approached Sisu Devices with a request to produce a turn-key slot car demo that integrates industrial sensors, motion, and vision with a visualization of Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) advantages.
We had a lot of fun designing a visually striking demo, incorporating the Cisco logo with landmarks from the San Francisco Bay Area. Slot cars race across the Golden Gate Bridge, zoom past the Transamerica Pyramid, and speed around the Bay overlooking Alcatraz Island.
This demo debuted at Hannover Messe on April 24, 2017.
Slot cars are tracked with sensors beneath the road surface. Photoelectric beam sensors detect how fast the cars are moving as they approach various obstacles — toll gates, windmills, and drawbridges.
Sensor data is passed to controllers using TSN, and obstacles are removed in time for the cars to pass safely.
Using a touch-screen interface, the presenter can increase the amount of background traffic on the network. Overhead displays show standard network latency while TSN network packets remain unaffected.
Mechanical, electrical, and software engineers at Sisu Devices collaborated to design and build the demo in just two months.
